Fred Rogers

“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say 'It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.' Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”

Fred Rogers, author, children's advocate, and children's programming pioneer

Dr. Zahoor A. Makhdoom and his team at Southern Illinois GI Specialists have been providing quality healthcare services to the region since 2000. One of only two gastrointestinal specialists serving the Southern Illinois area, his medical group aims to make available the same quality of services and technology found in urban centers such as Chicago and St. Louis.

Dr. Makhdoom addresses medical conditions of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas and gallbladder. "We serve many patients across large portions of the heartland and feel privileged to be able to provide our services to the area," says office manager, Marsha Turner. "We are also a family-oriented facility and strive to make sure our patients feel as comfortable here as they would at home."

A board-certified physician of internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Makhdoom specializes in gastrointestinal problems such as reflux, inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer prevention, and chronic liver disease. Last year, Dr. Makhdoom's office introduced nonsurgical hemorrhoid treatment to the region that eliminated the need for anesthesia or recovery time. This spring, Southern Illinois GI Specialists will add a "virtual colonoscopy" colorectal cancer screening technique new to southern Illinois. This non-invasive, computer/scan-based procedure avoids the sedation and pain of traditional colonoscopy. In addition to his own practice, Dr. Makhdoom works with Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro, and Herrin Hospital.

A longtime supporter of WSIU, Dr. Makhdoom is very pleased to celebrate his fourth year as a Friends of WSIU Auction Sponsor and also underwrites WSIU Radio. His family listens to WSIU Public Radio and watches WSIU Public television regularly. He supports public broadcasting not only because of the value it brings every day to his own family and staff members, but also as an investment in education for the entire region.

Dr. Makhdoom sums up his belief in WSIU as a matter of trust and quality. "I know that what I hear on WSIU is unbiased -- it's information I can trust. I have confidence in everything I see and hear from WSIU, and I have confidence that my children can listen at any time, and it will be safe and educational for them."

For more information, contact Dr. Makhdoom's office at (618) 549-8006 or visit their offices in Carbondale on West Diann (off Striegel Road), or in Herrin on Park Avenue.

Joe Hudgins, D.D.S, M.S., returned to Southern Illinois seventeen years ago to begin his orthodontic practice. After growing up in the Carbondale/Murphysboro area, he graduated from the University of Illinois, then attended Northwestern University for dental school, and finished his orthodontic residency at the University of Nebraska. After serving in the United States Navy, Joe returned to Southern Illinois to establish his practice in Carbondale and Marion.

Dr. Hudgins believes when it comes to orthodontic care, experience matters. He has twenty years of experience as an orthodontist and is committed to ongoing education to stay at the forefront of his profession. He is a member of many professional societies and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, all of which contribute to the highest level of skill and expertise. He expresses his philosophy as, "We treat children, adolescents, and adults of all ages with a caring, relaxed approach. Our well-trained, friendly team work to assess your or your child's smile and help you find an orthodontic treatment plan that is right for you and for them."

Dr. Hudgins offers several options that he defines as leading-edge care, including Invisalign® clear aligners, for which Dr. Hudgins has been recognized as a Premier Provider (top 5% of Invisalign providers in the number of cases treated). Invisalign® is a virtually invisible series of clear, removable aligners that straightens teeth and improves smiles.

Insignia® is an interactive, computerized system of orthodontic appliances designed to give each patient a truly customized smile while significantly reducing the length of time in treatment. It includes patient-specific braces, computer-assisted placement of braces on the teeth, and custom fabricated archwires to guide the teeth.

Another approach is the Damon® system of braces designed to allow teeth to move more comfortably and easily than traditional braces, making appointments shorter and fewer in number, and typically reducing time spent in treatment.

As a first-time sponsor for the WSIU Fantasy Auction, and a long-time WSIU Radio underwriter, Dr. Joe Hudgins is happy he can help celebrate this 20th Anniversary year of the Auction, and the 50th year that WSIU has been on the air in Southern Illinois. According to Joe, "This station has woven itself into the lives of people in our area. We depend on WSIU for timely, innovative, and in-depth news coverage on a local, nationwide, and world stage. It is diverse and thought provoking. In addition, the entertainment segments are unique and captivating. Public radio feeds my mind and my soul on a daily basis. WSIU helps our communities and region by keeping us in touch with each other and the world, with entertainment, and with outreach programs, and I want to help WSIU with that endeavor. We need it, and it needs us."

John Forbes knows a good investment when he sees one. That's why he's invested heavily in WSIU Public Broadcasting.

"WSIU is such a valuable resource," he says. "Like many things we enjoy, all too often we take them for granted. We just assume that WSIU will always be there and we forget that it takes our participation and commitment to ensure that public radio and television thrive in our region."

Forbes owns and operates Forbes Financial Group, an investment firm specializing in identifying and implementing personalized financial solutions for clients.

Forbes, an SIUC alumnus, has been a corporate underwriter of WSIU Public Radio for over a decade and has helped the stations to attract other underwriters from the WSIU listening and viewing areas. John also volunteers regularly during member drives to encourage audience members to get involved and support the stations.  Moreover, he has served as a member of the Friends Board of the WSIU stations and on the Auction Steering Committee.

Forbes and his team, including fellow SIU Alumni Joel Sambursky and Nancy Lindsey, know that investing is not a one-size-fits-all proposition and offers solutions tailored specifically to individual objectives. They work closely with clients to develop long-term investment plans that will help them reach their goals while making necessary adjustments along the way.

This spring, Forbes is celebrating his sixth year as a WSIU Auction sponsor and believes that by investing in WSIU he also is investing in his community and the entire region.

"The WSIU Auction is a wonderful event. It truly is a celebration of the role our public broadcasting stations play in southern Illinois. It's a great evening - a chance to visit with friends and have a good time while supporting this treasured community asset."
