POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
POSITION: Executive Director, Broadcasting Service.
APPOINTMENT DATE: September 15, 2008 or until position is filled.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the position required. At least 7 years of substantial work experience in a senior administrative capacity in broadcasting required. Proven leadership in administration, strategic and financial planning, fundraising, board development, entrepreneurial ventures, oral and written communication, and commitment to diversity required. Experience in public broadcasting and familiarity with the policies and procedures of a university licensee desirable.
DUTIES: The Executive Director of WSIU Public Broadcasting is responsible for planning, leading, directing, and evaluating overall management of administrative, programmatic, educational, development, technical, and external relations activities of a comprehensive media organization, as well as for effective liaison with the university, community, state and national entities, and Friends Board. An important part of this leadership role is the ability to integrate instructional opportunities for students and creative opportunities for faculty and staff in the various activities of the organization. WSIU Public Broadcasting is seeking a strong leader to articulate and implement a dynamic vision for the organization's future.  The Executive Director will provide content direction for program services and be responsible for solicitation of major gifts from foundations, corporations and individuals.  Some of the key challenges this Executive Director will face include: increasing major giving among the donor base and membership, expanding the existing individual and business bases for both sponsorship and charitable contributions, strengthening locally produced programming, increasing community involvement, leading WSIU's continuing conversion to digital television and digital radio, and staying abreast of changes and developments in the broadcasting industry that will impact the stations.
BROADCASTING SERVICE: With studio facilities in Carbondale, WSIU Public Broadcasting serves a five-state region and over 1.65 million citizens through educational, informational, and entertainment programming and outreach activities that foster educational, civic, and personal development.  The Broadcasting Service operates seven public broadcasting stations, WSIU-TV/DT, WSIU-FM, WUSI-TV/DT, WUSI-FM, WVSI-FM; a website, wsiu.org; a radio reading service; educational services and teacher training for preK-12th grade and adult learners; and community outreach services.  The Service has a 33 person professional staff, 100 person student staff, a $7.1 million annual budget, and is an integral component of the College and University, with a close working relationship with the departments of Radio/Television, Cinema & Photography, and the School of Journalism. Its mission is closely linked with the academic mission of the College and the University.
THE COLLEGE: The College of Mass Communication and Media Arts has three academic units, the Departments of Cinema & Photography and Radio-Television and the School of Journalism, as well as WSIU Public Broadcasting which houses the University's public radio and television stations. The College enrolls approximately 1,000 undergraduate and 150 graduate students.
THE UNIVERSITY: Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a Carnegie Research University with an enrollment of over 20,000 students. Carbondale, a university-centered community of 25,000 residents, is located 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, MO, on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest, famous for its rugged hilly terrain and natural beauty.
