Springfield, IL – The debate over personal firearms is going around again.
The Cook County state's attorney, Anita Alvarez, is backing a bill that requires gun owners to call the police within 72 hours if their gun is stolen or lost.
The thinking is that police would have a better handle on what guns are out there, and that it could slow down the trafficking of stolen guns.
But state lobbyist Todd Vandermyde for the National Rifle Association says the bill should not even be considered.
Republicans on the House Executive Committee said the bill could be a way to punish law-abiding gun owners, especially in the Chicago area.
House Bill 845 passed the House Executive Committee six to four.
