Carbondale, IL – With Saluki Way officially under construction, SIU Carbondale officials are still working on the final plans for the 83-million dollar project.
The poor economy has actually resulted in a cost savings as construction firms are hungry for work. SIUC Chancellor Sam Goldman says just because many of the contracts are coming in under bid doesn't mean there'll be more bells and whistles.
Goldman says now that the university is actually turning dirt on the new stadium and arena renovations... the project is gaining more financial support from individuals who were a little skeptical of whether or not the effort would materialize.
So far the university has raised about 6.5 million dollars of a 25-million dollar goal for the project. The City of Carbondale has pledged 20-million dollars and student fees will help pay for the rest of the projects initial phase.
