Alton, IL – A struggling Alton funeral director is accused of robbing a bank in southwest Indiana.
Forty-six-year-old George Chesnut is charged in Indiana's Gibson County with armed robbery.
Authorities contend Chesnut walked into a bank in Princeton, Indiana, last Friday and passed the teller a postcard saying he was an armed robber. Police say he showed the teller a handgun, then made off with roughly 45-hundred dollars.
Investigators say an off-duty Indiana state trooper later spotted Chesnut's car and stopped it. Money allegedly taken in the holdup was found in the engine compartment.
Authorities say a search of Chesnut's home found letters from collection agencies and evidence that his funeral home business was failing.
