Pontiac, IL – Some good news for central Illinois...Governor Pat Quinn is announcing he will keep the Pontiac Correctional Center open.
The community of Pontiac has been fighting to keep the prison open for nearly a year. Governor Quinn says it's fiscally responsible to keep it running.
State Senator Dan Rutherford says while the news is obviously good for Pontiac, it's also a positive for prison workers throughout the state.
The center houses more than 16-hundred inmates who would have had to be moved to other already overcrowded prisons if Pontiac was shut down.
Ousted Governor Rod Blagojevich announced plans last year to close the prison and move many of its inmates to the largely unused Thomson Correctional Center in western Illinois to save money.
