Marion, IL – Some community and labor leaders in southern Illinois are publicly supporting Governor Pat Quinn's tax reform proposal.
During his budget address last week, Quinn proposed raising the state income tax to help the state reduce an 11-point-five billion dollar deficit.
Quinn stopped by Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion today to talk about the merits of his budget plan. Marion Mayor Bob Butler said he supports Quinn's income tax hike proposal.
Building Trades Council Executive Director Tom Caliper said he thinks there is public support for an income tax hike that will get the state moving forward.
Quinn says he'll balance the income tax hike by boosting the personal tax exemption to six thousand dollars. He says that means about five million Illinoisans will actually get a tax break.
