Chicago, IL – Illinois needs rigorous oversight and regulation of the state's for-profit cemeteries.
That's the foundation of the final report issued by a task force formed in response to the discovery that bodies were being dug up at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip...and the plots resold.
The group...chaired by Patricia Brown Holmes...says the cemetery industry should be overseen by the state Department of Financial and Professional Regulation...not the Comptroller's office.
Holmes says licensing of cemetery owners and workers...as well as more oversight is definitely needed.
These changes will have to be approved by the state legislature.
