Tamms, IL – Illinois Governor Pat Quinn says he supports calls for reform at Tamms prison.
Corrections Director Michael Randle recommended ten reforms late last week, including hearings for prisoners being sent to the supermax prison.
Quinn says the public must be protected from violent criminals.
But, the governor says he believes in humane treatment that does not violate inmates' constitutional rights.
"I have a lot of confidence in Michael Randle. He went down to Tamms in Alexander County, I believe it is, and really studied the whole issue, talked to everyone involved. I think the plan is a good plan. "
Quinn says he supports fundamental corrections reform that gives taxpayers the best-run prison system for the money.
He says Randle will go prison by prison throughout the state to evaluate how they're operated and who's housed there.
