Springfield, IL – Governor Pat Quinn says releasing some inmates early will not endanger public safety...but will help save the state money.
Some of the planned reforms to the state Department of Corrections include releasing one thousand of the state's 46 thousand inmates.
Governor Quinn says those let out early will be non-violent offenders with less than a year left of their sentence.
It's estimated the early release will save the state about five million dollars a year. Those let our early will be under electronic surveillance until their sentence is up.
The first prison inmates to go free could be home within a month.
Corrections department officials say it will take two to four weeks to review the prisoners' files, inspect the places they'll be living and set them up with a parole agent and electronic monitoring.
