Science Cafe Seminar This Week on H1N1

By Jennifer Fuller

Carbondale, IL – An expert on immunology and epidemiology says despite the quick turnaround for creation of an H1N1 flu vaccine... people should not worry about its safety or effectiveness.

Emeritus SIUC Immunologist John Martinko says the vaccine, which is due out next month, should be considered as safe as the seasonal flu shot.

Martinko also says despite the negative connotation with the word "Pandemic", this virus is a pandemic simply because it is very contagious and has spread to many nations across the globe. He says that doesn't make it highly deadly... just easily transmittable.

You can hear Martinko talk about this at his upcoming Science Caf seminar - Thursday at the Science Center of Southern Illinois... or on our website... wsiu.org.
