Vienna, IL –
The state's largest employee union is due back in court on its lawsuit to block Gov. Pat Quinn's plan to lay off about 2,600 state workers.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 says the hearing is today (Wednesday) in Vienna.
The union is trying to block the layoffs of hundred of its members it says are set to happen Sept. 30.
Quinn has said the layoffs are cuts he has to make to deal with a patchwork budget lawmakers passed to avoid increasing the state income tax and making even deeper cuts.
The union contends the state is contracting out work that could be done by employees being laid off. It also says the job cuts will risk the safety of remaining employees at state prisons.
