Two Women Attacked in Anna Church

By Brad Palmer & AP

Anna, IL – Two elderly employees of an Anna church were allegedly attacked and beaten Monday afternoon inside the church.

According to the Illinois State Police, the two women were airlifted to the trauma center at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

Troopers say 69-year-old Mary Shepard is still at St. Francis under observation in the ICU. They say 76-year-old Leona Mount was air-lifted to St. Louis University Hospital and is awaiting surgery. Both are listed in stable condition. Authorities say their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Pastor Tony Foeller says the motives behind the attack aren't clear. He notes that nothing was taken.

The investigation is still on-going. Anyone with information regarding the assaults is encouraged to contact Anna Police, the Union County Sheriff's Department or the State Police.
