Since 1945, Arnette's Barbershop in Carbondale has been cutting hair, and serving as a place for friendly discussions.
And Carbondale Community Arts held a ribbon-cutting on Tuesday October 26, 2021 for a large mural on the outside of the business, painted by long time artist Najjar Abdul-Musawwir.
The title of his latest work is "Safe Place", because over the years, Musawwir says the barbershop been a haven for men and boys to share stories.
"Everytime I go in and get my haircut, I have great conversations. Nobody ever got shot, nobody ever got beat up, nobody ever got hurt. It's always a safe place for dialogue."
The mural, at 108 East Oak street, was funded by Carbondale Community Arts, which is looking to fund more art work in the future, highlighting local businesses.
