Three southern Illinois men are charged in connection with the deadly shooting in Carbondale on Monday afternoon.

Carbondale Police have identified the victim as 37-year-old John Pruitt of Chicago. He was shot and killed in the 700 block of South Lewis Lane.

In the course of the investigation, investigators arrested 29-year-old David Edwards Jr. of Carbondale, in the 200 block of North Wall Street. Pruitt and Edwards are known acquaintances and they had an ongoing dispute. Investigators charged Edwards with First Degree Murder.

Officers also arrested 27-year-old Lawrence Abernathy of Carbondale and 26-year-old Anthony Spruille of Carterville during a vehicle stop in the area at South Wall Street and East College Street.

Officers charged them both with Obstruction of Justice.

After consulting with the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, Edwards was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail. Abernathy and Spruille were released on recognizance bonds.
