The Carbondale chapter of the NAACP is hosting their 43rd annual MLK scholarship breakfast Monday morning. The breakfast begins at 7:30 in the SIU student center. The program begins at 8:30. This year's features spoken word presentations, elementary student essay winners, and a keynote address given by SIU student Taylor Lawrence.
Community organizations will have displays set up to showcase their work. This year they are collecting non-perishable food items for the the Saluki food pantry.
Carla Childs is this year's organizer. She says this event is one for all generations. "I bring my grandchildren to the breakfast because I don’t want them to forget who MLK was, what he did, and the foundation that he laid."
Tickets are 10 dollars for adults and five dollars for children.
