John A. Logan Men's Basketball Coach Tyler Smithpeters has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association Coach of the Year.
The honor comes after Smithpeters led his team to Logan's first NJCAA title last month. The Vols went 33 and 2 on the season, winning 31 straight games. He also was named Outstanding Coach of the National Tournament, and was NJCAA Region 24 Coach of the Year and Great Rivers Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
In addition to Smithpeters' awards, players Curt Lewis and Quimari Peterson also received accolades - Lewis was named First-Team All-American while Peterson was named Second-Team All-American.
Smithpeters, who grew up in Harrisburg, led his high school basketball team to a state championship, and played for the SIU Salukis, where he was named the 2018 MVC Sixth Man of the Year. He took over the Head Coaching position at Logan last year, after serving as an assistant to his brother, Kyle, who moved on to a position at the University of Missouri.
