The third annual Shawnee Polar Plunge into Pounds Hollow Lake to support the Friends of the Shawnee National Forest and the Equality Fire Department takes place next week. Event coordinators want a dip in the lake to be a fun way to celebrate the beginning of spring.

Several events leading up to the Polar Plunge will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a guided hike in the area. The Friends of the Shawnee will serve food and hot beverages, and Carbondale musician John West will perform at 1 p.m.

Individuals under 18 years wishing to participate must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver at the event site.

Advanced registration can be made online through February 27. The plunge will occur on March 2 around 3 p.m., with check-in beginning at 1:30 p.m.
