Harvesting the Field [Encore of #16-42]
In the midst of the autumn harvest, we look back to "field" recordings from around the middle of the 20th century and earlier, in an attempt to "harvest" some of the most enduring vocal and instrumental performances by legendary and mostly non-professional sources of much of today's recording and performing repertoire.
Tribute to Tommy Peoples
Tommy Peoples, the great Donegal fiddle player, died on August 4th of this year. This week, we pay tribute to his music, from recordings with the original Bothy Band, to duo and solo work over the years.
The traditional Celtic holiday of Samhain was the source of what many people these days celebrate as Halloween. We celebrate both traditions this week with music for the holiday, a time when the ghosts of the dead were most likely to mingle with the living.
The top of the month means that we sample from recent albums that we continue to feature, as well as from brand new arrivals.
Music of World War I
In honor of 100th anniversary of the end of WWI on November 4, 1918, we focus this week on music from the war period as well as more recent songs about the WWI experience.
All of this week's albums are on the Topic Records label from England, with great English singers like Nic Jones, June Tabor, Martin Carthy, and Norma Waterson, as well as bands like Brass Monkey and Waterson:Carthy.
All the songs and tunes this week are from 2013 releases and are being heard on our program for the first time this week.
Our final New Releases program of 2018 will include many of the albums that are leading contenders for the Album of the Year, which will be announced at the end of this month.
Spotlight on Scotland
The spotlight is on Scottish bands, singers, and songwriters this week as we showcase the great variety of music from the highlands to the lowlands.
Songs and tunes from the past half-century will be featured in this week's program.
The western European traditions of Christmas celebration have given us many songs of the season, and this is the week for enjoying Christmas music as played by Celtic musicians.
