MOUND CITY, IL - The Mound City National Cemetery Preservation Commission welcomes the public to attend the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the beautiful, historic Mound City National Cemetery on Saturday, May 27, at 10:00 AM. The program features the flag raising, rifle and cannon salutes, and other tributes to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Richard Kuenneke will speak about Marine Corporal Jewell C. Bruce, a posthumous recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in combat - the second highest decoration for valor after the Medal of Honor. Jewell was killed in action in Korea in 1950 and rests in the Mound City National Cemetery.
Richard researched Jewell through letters, photographs, and other keepsakes the commission recently acquired, including the Distinguished Service Cross medal now on display at the MCNCPC Museum at 315 South Fourth Street, Mound City, Illinois.
“We have a remarkable story to share,” said Kuenneke. “Jewell Bruce, and so many like him, is why we have Memorial Day.”
