The City of Carbondale has pledged to protect monarch butterflies and other pollinators by signing the National Wildlife Federation's Mayors' Monarch Pledge.

The City has committed to:

  • Protecting pollinators in southern Illinois
  • Raising awareness the pollinator decline
  • Reviewing the City code to encourage pollinator-supportive landscapes
  • Correcting landscape maintenance practices that harm pollinators
  • Creating a community "pollinator yards" pilot program to educate and support planting pollinator-supportive landscapes.

Carbondale joins a North American network of cities working to create habitat in public parks, public landscaping, vacant lots, roadsides, medians, green roofs, backyard gardens and open spaces throughout the community.
