Starting October 3, the City of Carbondale's Police Department will partner with CivicPlus, a software that issues urgent notifications, emergency instructions, warnings, and other communications in the area.

The Police Department says in a local emergency, the community will benefit from immediate information since this new set-up will allow residents to receive public alerts through emails, text messages, or voicemails.

In the future, The CivicPlus Mass Notification System will work with the Integrated Public Alert Warning System to provide alerts in times of emergency. IPAWS uses the Emergency Alert System, NOAA weather radios, digital road markers, and media broadcasts. This way, the CivicPlus System is able to reach as many people as possible during an emergency, including those who don't opt-in to alerts and visitors in the area.
