Bed Bath and Beyond is closing around 150 low-producing stores including the Carbondale location.
Last month Bed Bath and Beyond announced a new strategic plan to drive growth, profits and better serve customers.
Illinois will see 6 stores closing before the end of the year including Carbondale.
The company also plans to reduce 20% of their corporate and supply chain personnel.
Carbondale Economic Development Director Steve Mitchell says the city is disappointed the Carbondale store was in the first round of closures.
“I think maybe a couple different types of impact. You know, you've obviously we've got the retail sales tax of that they contribute to our local economy. But then, you know, and we've got the employment, uh, that we're going to lose from there. Um, but, uh, and just the, uh, the, the traffic, uh, that it generates when people come from out of town to visit there.”
The company has not released the store's final day of business.
The other five locations that are slated to close are Bourbonnais, Fairview Heights, Gurnee, Joliet and Schaumburg.
