Gov. Rauner: Universities Must Optimize Resources

Cap and money

Governor Bruce Rauner has long held that state universities need to cut down on their administrative overhead, before he can support increases in their state funding.

But during a visit to Urbana last week, the Republican governor said his administration has not yet decided how much of a cut in administrative costs is needed on college campuses.

"With everything that we've had goin' on, our team has not sat with specific universities, and gone through the detail of the progress they've made. I know they're all workin'. And I applaud them for that. And in the coming months, I'm sure we'll be visiting about the progress made, and what other things we can do to help them make progress, to make sure that our resources are really optimized."

U of I President Timothy Killeen says the university has already implemented several cost-saving measures, including a hiring freeze, and the re-directing of funds formerly spent on administration.

Rauner says he knows that the U of I and other public universities in the state are taking his concerns seriously, and are working to reduce the cost of their administrative bureaucracies.  But he says more state funding for state universities can only come with a balanced state budget.
