In 2012 CCHS hired a school resource officer that replaced the school’s director of security. The school resource officer is a sworn Carbondale Police Officer and their salary is paid by the school district.
There are some people in the community that do not want a armed police officer in the school.
Luke Herron-Titus organized a public forum on Monday to gather the voices of other concerned citizens that believe the SRO contract should not be renewed.
"Carbondale’s police department has an over inflated budget that we need to direct more towards social services and there’s community organizations out there that need this money.”
A spokesperson for the city says CPD has provided support to students and staff at CCHS, and says it's been successful in developing meaningful relationships. The city plans to continue supporting the school - whatever the administration decides.
The high school currently has professional licensed social and mental health available for students. Herron-Titus says a group of people will voice their concerns at the next school board meeting April 22nd.
