The school discussed hatred and the role it has played in history with students.

A student at Unity Point school recently distributed "white privilege" cards to classmates. The school said they are taking action to address the issue and ensure a safe learning environment for all their students.

Dean of Students Mary Beth Goff said the school used the incident to start conversations about hatred and the role it has played throughout history. She said they are also looking at ways to continue facilitating these discussions.

"We're really taking a really hard look at what do we need to do, are there other ways that we can take this situation, or this moment and turn it into something we're talking to kids about on a more regular basis," she said.

Goff said the school is committed to creating a safe environment for the diverse student body.
