Both SIU Carbondale and SIU Edwardsville are recipients of the 2024 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity, or the HEED Award from the Insight Into Diversity Magazine, a well-known publication in higher education. The HEED Award recognizes colleges and universities that commit to diversity and inclusion.
The Insight Into Diversity magazine will feature the two SIU system universities in its November/December issue.
Lenore Pearlstein, the magazine's publisher, says quote, "We take a detailed approach reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus."
Both SIUE and SIUC have made clear efforts towards inclusion. SIUE has impacted over 20 Metro East schools in the Belleville area with their Institute for Community Justice and Racial Equity and Defense Fund Freedom School program.
SIUC has a long history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community, Black history, Hispanic/Latinx heritage, and more. SIU Carbondale holds Diversity Week annually and provides scholarships to assist underprivileged groups of students.
