Ameren Illinois shared tips on reducing your energy consumption and lowering your heating and AC bills.

Spring in the Midwest often brings wildly fluctuating temperatures. Ameren Illinois shared tips on reducing your energy consumption and lowering your heating and AC bills.

Tony Lozano, the director of energy efficiency at Ameren Missouri says, "Temperatures can vary a lot this time of year, which may have customers wanting to adjust the thermostat more often than usual to switch between heating and air conditioning. Making small adjustments around the house can balance out your home's internal temperature without the extra energy usage."

Temperatures may rise to a neutral zone where no heat or AC is required. Opening windows and screen doors will keep temperatures at the ideal temperature. Replace HVAC filters every three months to lower the air conditioner's energy usage.

Adjusting the ceiling fan to rotate counterclockwise will push cold air to the floor. An advanced power strip to reduce phantom loads can save up to 100 dollars yearly. Consider solar-powered porch and pathway lights for times of the year with longer daylight hours.
