About Region River Evening Edition:

About the Newsroom

The Evening Edition TV newsroom is a state-of-the-art facility that allows students to gain hands-on experience working in a real TV newsroom, putting together a newscast that airs live in five states to a potential audience of more than three million people. In addition to more than two hours of news programming per week, the students also produce a half-hour sportscast Saluki SportsView, which airs monthly.

The Evening Edition newsroom gives students the opportunity to learn how to make contacts, interview newsmakers, and use video and audio equipment in the field.

  Newsroom Stats

• Studio measures 32 by 50 feet and features four digital high definition cameras.

• Professional news set with a green screen for the broadcast of news, weather and sports.

• Studio control room is a state-of-the-art digital high definition facility

• Video switching, sound, graphics, and video systems that are similar to equipment used by professional television stations across the nation.

Student reporters are trained to be multi-media journalists (MMJs) with proficiency in reporting, writing, videography, video editing, web-reporting and on-camera presentation.

The newsroom workstations allow students to work on the newscast using a PC-based news computer system that creates seamless workflow between story planning, writing, producing and broadcast.

The workstations include access to the Mac-based video editing system, Final Cut Pro, without moving to another computer. Students capture, edit, and deliver video to WSIU’s master control room for broadcast and to the Evening Edition web site where their stories can be seen from around the world. Students also have the option of archiving their own work on a portable hard drive or DVD.

Mentorship and Professional Development

Experienced TV news veterans and educators provide guidance in the newsroom, but students put together newscasts at every step themselves. It is their production - more than 100 students work behind the scenes and in front of the cameras each semester.

Broadcasting Partnerships

The newsroom and Evening Edition newscast are operated in a partnership between the SIU College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, the Department of Radio, Television, and Digital Media and WSIU Public Broadcasting. The collaboration provides students with the valuable blend of a quality education with the hands-on experience that is sought by prospective employers.

Student journalists in the Evening Edition newsroom have complete access to Associated Press coverage of regional, national and international stories. A partnership with CNN provides access to and use of news on-demand through CNN Newsource using the Pathfire Digital Media Gateway system.
