The behavioral health provider Centerstone recently held a workshop to help mental health professionals in treating patients with gambling addiction.
Michelle Malkin, a gambling researcher at Michigan State University pointed out that gambling because an addiction when it disrupts any area of your life, including family and work. She has seen this addiction cross the line into some people having an uncontrollable urge to gamble.
Malkin added the addiction is hard to treat with studies showing that only five percent of those seeking help are successfull in their first year of treatment. Another expert, Bill Johnson with the Illinois Council on Problem Gambling says of all the addictions treated, Gambling addicts have by far the highest suicide rate.
Centerstone will hold a screening for gambling disorders on Tuesday March 10th at their Marion and Carbondale locations.
