Lung Cancer Awareness Month Offers Opportunities To Quit Smoking

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

Between 80 and 90 percent of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. The American Cancer Society helps provide information on cancer and resources for people hoping to quit.

Caleb Nehring, Cancer Control manager for Southern Illinois, says the Great American Smoke Out, on November 19th, is a good way for smokers hoping to quit get started.

“Research shows that if you can quit for one day then it’s easier to quit for good,” he said.

Nehring says people who’ve already quit smoking should talk to their doctor about screening programs for lung cancer. People over 55 who have a history of smoking may be eligible for low-dose CT scans that can detect lung cancer in the early stages.

In Illinois, the Tobacco Hotline also offers resources for smokers who want to quit. Call 1-866-QUIT-YES to find out more.
