Students studying archeology can take part in a six-week long field study this summer.

For the last few years SIU’s Anthropology Department and Center for Archaeological Investigations offers an experimental learning class called Digging Illinois History.

During the field class students will work alongside professional archaeologist at Ft. Kaskaskia learning to excavate systematically, recover information, document findings and more.

Associate Professor and Center for Archaeological Investigations Director Mark Wagner says students from other universities also attend the class, but for some the cost can be difficult.

“We started this crowd funding effort to raise that sort of money, and so we don't pay their tuition, but we will help them with housing costs on the SIU campus, such as that either a touch of nature or the dorms and that's made a big difference. It's enabled us to increase the number of students we have in that class. It also helps get the word out about SIU.”
