The City of Carbondale is preparing to start a survey of historic properties later this month.
Carbondale received a $21,000 grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for the historic preservation project.
Southern Illinois Historic Preservation will begin the process of identifying and documenting historically significant buildings in the northeast side of town.
City Planner Ashley Gibson says at first, they were only looking at structures but decided to include other properties as well.
“We're also going to be surveying the parcels themselves. So even if there's a vacant lot, um, the consultants will, you know, look into the history of that lot, maybe prominent ownership Um, you know, really just to try to get an idea of what our cultural heritage, the rich history is within those structures in that land.”
The consultants will begin the survey in the next couple of weeks.
