A 16-year-old is accused of shooting another 16-year-old to death in Mt. Vernon.

Late Saturday afternoon, the Mt Vernon Police Department was dispatched to a residence in the 1800 block of Lamar. When they arrived, the officers determined a 16-year-old female had been shot. Arriving officers also encountered a 16-year-old male holding a handgun. Officers were able to take the 16 year old male into custody and secure the firearm.

The 16-year-old female victim was transported to a local hospital where she later died.

After consulting with the Jefferson County State's Attorney's Office, the 16 year old male will be detained on preliminary charges of Armed Violence/Discharge a Firearm, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Involuntary Manslaughter and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Person Under 18. Charges may be amended.

The 16-year-old male was on parole at the time of the shooting on Saturday. The Illinois Department of Corrections may issue a parole violation warrant.
