A Chicago man faces First Degree Murder charges in the death of a Carbondale infant.

Carbondale Police say 28-year-old Melvin Daniels is the biological father of the victim.

On February 13, Daniels was arrested by the U.S. Marshal Service in Chicago. Daniels was extradited from Cook County to Jackson County and has since had his pre-trial detention hearing. He was released from custody on pre-trial conditions.

The infant suffered severe life-threatening injuries and ultimately died as a result of the injuries after being taken from Memorial Hospital in Carbondale to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis.
