Journey back Inside The Blanket Fort as we continue our focus on Black History Month by discussing two more titles on African American history from SIU Press.
The first book, which came out in January of 2020, is Duty beyond the Battlefield: African American Soldiers Fight for Racial Uplift, Citizenship, and Manhood, 1870–1920. In this book, author Le’Trice D. Donaldson locates the often-overlooked era between the Civil War and the end of World War I as the beginning of black soldiers’ involvement in the long struggle for civil rights.
The second book is The Ordeal of the Jungle: Race and the Chicago Federation of Labor, 1903–1922. In this book, author David Bates tells the story of the Chicago Federation of Labor (the CFL) which inaugurated a massive organizing drive in the city’s meatpacking and steel industries between 1910 and 1920.
