Benton, Rend Lake offers the 2024 Small World Program. Each month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Rend Lake hosts a Small World environmental education program designed for children five years old and younger, at the Rend Lake Visitor Center the third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 AM and are free to the public. all ages are welcome to attend. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
February 20: "Build Like a Beaver" –Beavers are nature’s engineers! Build and test your own beaver dam. Home school groups, pre-school groups, daycare facilities, and other groups are welcome to participate, but should register first by contacting the Rend Lake Project Office/Visitor Center at 618-724-2493. Schedules are available at the Rend Lake Project Office/Visitor Center and on the Rend Lake Project Office/Visitor Center Facebook page.

Illinois Extension will host a fruit tree workshop on Feb. 1 to cover variety selection, root stock selection, and pruning basics. The small fruits program on Feb. 22 will cover blueberries, brambles strawberries, and edible landscape applications. Fruit trees and small fruits can add a sweet addition to your garden. Both workshops are free and will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Jackson County Extension office in Murphysboro.
