ON THIS DAY in 1955 Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering, the precursor to Sony, begins selling its first transistor radios in Japan

In Carbondale, the annual 9/11 Saluki Stair Climb will be held on September 11, at the SIU Banterra Center. This event honors those who lost their lives on 9/11. It's open to Southern Illinois first responders, veterans, and the local community. Challenge yourself to climb 110 flights of stairs, either individually or as a team. Alternatively, walk 2 miles around the Banterra Center concourse, representing the evacuation distance from Ground Zero across the Brooklyn Bridge. The event kicks off with commemorative remarks. In Mt Vernon, The Cedarhurst Art & Craft Fair, a Southern Illinois tradition, is celebrating its 48th year at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts.

In Benton, the Rend Lake Small World Educational Program for kids continues at at the Rend Lake Visitor Center on Tuesday, August 20th at 10am. Children will learn what types of materials sink or float while exploring water and buoyancy.
Home school groups, pre-school groups, daycare facilities, and other groups are welcome to participate, but should register first by contacting the Rend Lake Project Office/Visitor Center at 618-724-2493.
