In Carbondale, attend the FREE screening of Before the West Coast: A Sports Civil Rights Story, a powerful documentary by SIU alumnus and SIU Foundation Board Member, Oyd Craddock. This film tells the inspiring story of how St. Augustine High School broke racial barriers and integrated Louisiana’s all-white athletic association following a 1967 federal court order.

The River to River Trail Society announces its 2nd public hike of the 2024 fall hiking season on Oct. 12th. Hiking: Max Creek (Johnson County). This hike is free and open to the public. This will be a loop hike approximately 5.5 miles in length. Hikers should meet at 10:00 am at New Simpson Hill School. The City of Carbondale, Carbondale Main Street, and the SIU Alumni Association are shutting down The Strip for a special "Off the Rails Concert" during Southern Illinois University’s 2024 Homecoming. The concert will feature the farewell performance of local legends Jungle Dogs, with Modern Day Saints opening. Illinois Avenue will be closed from College to Elm Street. Public consumption of alcohol in non-glass containers will be allowed in the downtown entertainment district. This exciting event invites alumni, students, and the Southern Illinois community to celebrate Homecoming with live music, food, and local vendors. The concert will take place at Illinois Avenue and Cherry Street from 7-10 PM on October 11, with street closures starting at 11 a.m.
