In Carbondale, Southern Illinois Culture and Art in Bilingual Education, in collaboration with The Varsity Center, Carbondale Public Library, and the City of Carbondale Invites the community to honor the rich cultural heritage of Día de los Muertos with an Art Showcase. Tonight from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, guest presenter Michelle Soto shares insights into Día de los Muertos traditions. Participants will have the chance to decorate sugar skulls, create Mexican paper flowers, and enjoy traditional treats. You’re also invited to submit the name and image of a loved one to be recognized at the altar. In Metropolis, The Fort Massac Encampment, will return to Fort Massac State Park this Saturday & Sunday. Oct. 19 and 20. Experience what life was like at Fort Massac during the 18th and early 19th centuries. See mock military battles and tactical demonstrations performed by reenactors. Family and children’s activities, musical entertainment, and period craft makers demonstrating blacksmithing, basket-making, weaving, and other skills will be staged throughout the encampment grounds. Admission is free. Parking is available at the Old Fairgrounds adjacent to the park. Trams will be available during event times which are 10 to 5 Saturday and 9 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
