Officials with Southern Illinois University Carbondale requested funding for capital infrastructure needs Monday in Springfield.

In a hearing with the Senate Subcommittee on Capital & Transportation Joint Committee, SIU-C interim chancellor John Dunn said there are many needs in Carbondale.
"We're 150 years old. (Our) sesquicentennial campaign makes it pretty clear, we've been in business a long time. Both our infrastructure needs and our capital needs, which have not been attended to for many years, need help."

Dunn's request includes construction for the Agricultural Sciences, Neckers and Communications buildings. He said all need renovation.

"In addition to the need for capital construction, we have deferred maintenance of over $700 million."

State Senator Martin Sandoval from Chicago asked higher education representatives how Illinois should pay for these requests. Representatives said the requests are investments that will generate future capital in the state.
