SIU law students will be participating in a virtual Moot Court this weekend, and they’ll be debating an issue that’s in currently making news.
Students from 21 law schools across the nation will be participating in the event, which SIU is hosting. They’ll be tackling the topic of mask mandates. Participants will be arguing the hypothetical case, which centers around face masks and the pandemic, as if they were presenting it to the Supreme Court.
Law School Professor Cheryl Anderson said the topic was chosen because it is so timely.
“There’s been a lot of talk about these mask mandates, and there’s been a number of arguments raised about, not just mandates but in general, the state’s ability to issue executive orders or other sort of requirements for mitigation purposes. It’s interesting, I think, to see what the law really says about that,” Anderson said.
The final round of the competition will be livestreamed on YouTube at 4 pm on Saturday.
