SIU-C honors veterans with vigil

ROTC cadets stand in front of the flag.

A silent vigil on the SIU-Carbondale campus is honoring those who served on Veteran's Day.

Cadets from SIU's Army and Air Force ROTC program are standing vigil at the flagpole on campus, changing guard every 15 minutes.

In addition to the vigil, there was a wreath-laying ceremony with remarks from SIU administrators and Carbondale Mayor Mike Henry.

Cadet and SIU junior Aaron Schmidt said it's a chance for students in the program to recognize the sacrifices made by those who came before them, and to recognize what they may face when they serve.

"But whatever sacrifice we could be called to give, it kind of puts into perspective that sacrifice that we could all give," he said.

The cadets will stand guard from sunrise to sunset to honor those who served.
