June 30 is truly the end of an era in Southern Illinois University Carbondale athletics, for the University as a whole and Saluki fans everywhere.

The longtime Voice of the Salukis Mike Reis announced on May 31 he was stepping down after a 44-year career that included over 13-hundred basketball games, 500 football games and countless baseball contests. Friday is his last official day on the job.

I had the pleasure of taping a television program with Reis as well as two longtime colleagues in the broadcast booth, Gene Green and Mike Trude.

This is a brief excerpt from that half-hour TV program, which will air on July 13 at 7 p.m.

This radio segment starts with the question to Reis as to why he is stepping away now.

As a news producer and news anchor on All Things Considered, Brad provides the listeners with a recap of the day's top local and state news as well as breaking news at any given time. Contact WSIU Radio at 618-453-6101 or email wsiunews@wsiu.org
