A virtual lecture on Feb. 7 hosted by the Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Law will focus on how artificial intelligence, or AI, can be used in the legal profession.

John Tredennick, founder and CEO of Merlin Search Technologies, will present “Using Generative AI to Revolutionize Investigations and Discovery Workflow.” The free lecture is from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and available both at the Lesar Law Building, Room 102, or via Zoom.

Before founding Merlin Search Technologies, which develops AI-powered search software for investigations, legal discovery and regulatory compliance, Tredennick was founder of Catalyst Repository Systems, and was a trial lawyer and litigation partner with Holland & Hart, a national law firm based in Denver.

The lecture will “focus on the use of generative AI in the discovery process in civil litigation and in responding document requests in government investigations,” said Andrew Pardieck, a professor in the SIU School of Law.

The presentation is primarily useful for attorneys and others in the legal profession but may also be of interest to people who work in AI or data analytics fields, Pardieck said. It is designed to provide a better understanding of how generative AI works and how it can be applied to discovery in civil litigation.
