As students returned to Southern Illinois University on August 19, 2024, for the new academic year, the Carbondale Police Department extended a warm welcome to both new and returning students. Recognizing the importance of safety on and off campus, the department provided valuable resources to help students navigate their time in Carbondale.

The police department urged students and local residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or issues that may require attention from city departments. They shared a helpful resource, the “Who to Call” guide, which can be accessed online [here](https://www.explorecarbondale.com/DocumentCenter/View/2683/Who-To-Call-PDF). This guide offers a comprehensive list of contacts for various city services, ensuring that students know exactly who to reach out to in different situations.

In addition to the guide, the city introduced the SeeClickFix tool, a user-friendly web platform that allows citizens to report non-emergency neighborhood issues off campus. The police emphasized that while SeeClickFix is ideal for non-emergencies, 911 should always be used for situations requiring immediate assistance from law enforcement, fire services, or medical responders. For water main breaks or sewer stoppages, residents should contact the Water and Sewer Hotline at 618-529-1731.

For on-campus incidents, students are advised to call the SIU Department of Public Safety at 618-453-3771. Off-campus non-emergencies can be reported to the Carbondale Police Department at 618-457-3200.

The Carbondale Police Department expressed their commitment to fostering a safe and successful school year, underscoring the importance of collaboration between the police, students, and the broader community. They look forward to a positive and productive year, reinforcing their role as partners in ensuring the well-being of everyone in Carbondale. Go Salukis!
