Work continues to bring a fresh food market to the City of Cairo.

A steering committee met last week to get an update on the effort to establish the Rise Community Co-Op Market in the former Subway building.

Minutes from the meeting show a tentative opening date has been set for Martin Luther King, Junior Day on January 16.

But, committee members stressed many factors remain to be determined including a budget, further remodeling of the market's location, equipment supply chain issues and workforce readiness.

They plan to order equipment soon such as security systems, coolers, freezers and cash registers once grants are confirmed.

Job advertisements could go up in late December.

Cairo has been without a grocery store for nearly seven years.
