Southern Illinois Immigrant Rights Project Protests Against White Supremacy

Volunteers with the Southern Illinois Immigrant Rights Project showed their support for El Paso Wednesday.

They’re calling on Congressman Mike Bost to condemn white supremacy rhetoric, policies and trends.

Congressman Mike Bost had some visitors at his Carbondale office Wednesday.

A group of volunteers with the Southern Illinois Rights Project delivered a letter and held a picket asking Bost to condemn the white supremist rhetoric and policies they hear coming from the current administration.

Chairperson Becca Tally says their group wants Congressman Bost to make a statement denouncing white supremacy.

“That is necessary for the people that are here residing in his district to know that he wants to serve and protect everyone of us no matter what race, religion, creed or national origin that we are from.”

The group believes freedom of speech is important, but speech can have consequences that can fuel acts of violence.

They feel society needs to take action against ideologies that incite violence and improve gun control laws.

“We have to come up with ways to make the disparities in gun violence here in the United States different and what we see in other places that don’t experience these mass shootings are differences in gun policies.”
