House Committee Approves Same Sex Marriage Bill

Same-sex marriage moved one step closer to becoming the law of Illinois.

Late Tuesday, a House committee voted to advance the measure. Now it has to get through the full House, where backers acknowledge they're still trying to round up votes.  Although Democrats have a large majority, not all of them are expected to support it.  Representative Luis Arroyo of Chicago voted "yes" in committee. But he says he was only doing that as a favor to the sponsor and his support would likely end there: "I don't think I can vote for this bill on the floor of the House, because of my religious beliefs, and because of the churches in my district that I represent and I support."

The so called marriage equality act has already passed the Senate. If the measure does get through the House, Governor Pat Quinn says he will sign it into law.
