As the April 15 income tax deadline approaches, Attorney General Kwame Raoul issued guidance to avoid scams while filing tax returns.

As the April 15 income tax deadline approaches, Attorney General Kwame Raoul issued guidance to avoid scams while filing tax returns. With many tax filing services being digital, Attorney General Raoul urges people to be on the lookout for scam tax preparers and to avoid giving out personal info.

Attorney General Raoul says to thoroughly review documents before signing them, especially those with e-signatures. Scammers can use electronic signatures to sign forms or to justify unnecessary charges.

Raoul advises avoiding giving out your social security number unless there's a good reason. He also suggests researching before selecting a tax preparer and applying for a six-digit Identity Protection PIN. Report any suspicious or threatening IRS mail, phone calls, or emails to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and the Federal Trade Commission online or by calling them.
